My Humble Hut

My humble hut

may look tiny,

but the veggies around

it, sure are many.

Yam beans and eggplants,

wing’d beans and peanuts,

string, hyacinth and lima beans.

Winter melon and loofah,

bottl’ gourd, squash, et cetera.

There is more, amiga,

radish, mustard, yeah!

Onions, tomatoes

garlic and ginger.

If you look all around,

sesame seeds abound!

Bahay kubo,

kahit munti,

ang halaman doon,

ay sari-sari.

Singkamas at talong,

sigarilyas at mani,

sitaw, bataw, patani.

Kundol, patola,

upo’t kalabasa,

at saka meron pa,

labanos, mustasa.

Sibuyas, kamatis,

bawang at luya.

Sa paligid-ligid

ay puno ng linga!

    Makabuluhang bagong taon sa lahat. Tanong ni Rio, bakit daw gumawa ka ng Inggles na version ng Bahay Kubo? Basta, ang ganda (sabi ko sa kanya).

    Hi, I grew up in the Philippines and we were taught this song in our tagalog class. I still remember some of the words and it made me smile to see this on your blog.

    Hi Mr. Robert Verzola,

    I enjoyed singing to your version of the bahay kubo. I hope you don’t mind if i suggest that you change turnip to jicama, which is the English transaltion of singkamas. Great job and hope you do more of this.

    To Vic:

    Jicama sounds almost like our term for it, singkamas. I suspect it is a Spanish or possibly Mexican term that other English speakers may not be familiar with. Since jicama is also known as yam beans, I now use “yam beans” instead of turnips.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    As for doing more, what song(s) did you have in mind?
